A former Israel Police officer suffering from PTSD set himself alight outside the home of a senior official in the Defense Ministry’s rehabilitation department on Friday.
The former officer was transported to a hospital by medical staff, according to the Defense Ministry. Medics said the officer is in serious condition.
The officer, a man in his 40s, has long been recognized within the department as struggling with both physical and mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress. The traumatic incident that triggered his condition occurred roughly a decade ago, and he retired from the police force nine years ago.
Before Friday’s incident, the former officer had repeatedly protested outside the official’s home, demanding that the department recognize him as fully disabled. He is currently classified as only 30 percent disabled due to PTSD and physical injuries sustained in the 2013 attack.
About a month ago, he was indicted by an Israeli court for assaulting the official in a shopping center parking lot, accused of pulling her hair and striking her head with his fists. Testimonies indicate he has allegedly behaved violently on other occasions as well.
The Defense Ministry’s rehabilitation department currently serves over 82,000 people, including more than 31,000 injured individuals dealing with mental health challenges. Of these, over 20,000 were wounded in the Gaza war, with approximately 55 percent experiencing psychological trauma.
