The new commander of the police’s Jerusalem District, Maj. Gen. Avshalom Peled, was sworn in on Sunday, only about six weeks before the start of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. Peled, the deputy police commissioner until now, will have the keys to the Temple Mount/Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the most volatile site in the country and possibly the region.
