I’m old enough to remember when there was such a thing as an award for best Jewish director. Sure, it was better known at the time as an Oscar, when the likes of Michael Curtiz, William Wyler, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann and Joseph L. Mankiewicz – and, subsequently, Sidney Lumet, Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg – were regular recipients of the Academy Award for best director.
