The following is a list of indignities that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s nationalist-right wing government has had to swallow from the hands of U.S. President Donald Trump: the U-turn of Israeli fighter jets, seconds before bombing Iran; the U.S. defense pact with Qatar in the wake of Israel’s failed attack on Hamas leaders in Doha; Netanyahu’s forced apology to Qatar’s prime minister in a humiliating phone call from the Oval Office, before the cameras; the ending of the Gaza war without conquering Gaza City and without killing “every last terrorist”; Trump’s public flirtation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan; Trump’s promise to sell Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman F-35 jets on par with those sold to Israel and without any commitment to normalization; an agreement in principle to help the Saudis develop a civilian nuclear program and the signing of a bilateral defense pact; a United Nations Security Council resolution that may create the conditions for a “pathway” to a Palestinian state, among other things, based on the French-Saudi plan that Israel’s ministers reviled when President Emmanuel Macron presented it at the UN. Today, they just swallow their tongues.
