In the first days of the war in Gaza, the yellow ribbon was adopted as the symbol of the struggle to bring the hostages home. Back then it hadn’t yet evolved into fancy bumper stickers or pins in every possible plastic and metal design. It was still just a simple yellow fabric ribbon. Volunteers took a long roll of it – probably meant for wrapping gifts – cut it into frayed strips and handed them out to drivers near the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv to tie on their side mirrors. Those were the early days of the movement. Who knew that days would turn into weeks, weeks into months and months into years.
